Thomas & Friends (formally Thomas the Tank Engine & Friends) is a famous long-running British television series created by Britt Allcroft, Based The Railway Series by the Reverend W Awdry. It follows the adventures of Thomas, an anthropomorphised tank engine, on the fictional Island of Sodor with fellow engines including Edward, Henry, Gordon, James, and Percy, and several other anthropomorphised vehicles. Thomas usually gets into trouble by doing jobs best left to bigger and more sensible engines, but never gives up on being a "Really Useful Engine".
The series launched on October 1984 on ITV in the United Kingdom. It also premiered on PBS Kids with the American spin-off series Shining Time Station in the United States. Thomas & Friends shortly later became a hit Worldwide, and despite being primarily aimed at children, the show has developed a following among teenagers and adults.
It was acquired by HIT Entertainment when the company acquired Gullane Entertainment for approx £144-million in July 2002, and has remained HiT’s most successful brand ever since. Thomas is also the 4th most successful brand of Mattel.
