Bob the Builder is a British-American stop-motion animated children's television series created by Keith Chapman for HIT Entertainment. In the original series, Bob appears as a building contractor, specializing in masonry, along with his colleague Wendy, and his building vehicles including Scoop, Muck, Lofty, Roley and Dizzy; working on important building projects for the residents of Bob's Vill, which is located somewhere in London, England.

The original series ran from 1999-2004 in the United Kingdom and worldwide, when it was later discontinued to start a continuation series. Bob the Builder: Project: Build It came out on May 2005 and ran until August 2008, and featured Bob and the gang working on a building project in sunflower-valley. It was also the last animated by Hot Animation. The show was later created using CGI-animation starting with the spin-off series Ready, Steady, Build!.

In November 2014, Mattel and HiT Entertainment announced that a 2015 reboot series of Bob the Builder would premiere in the UK on Channel 5's Milkshake! children's programming block on September 1st, 2015; and later PBS Kids in the US. The 2015 series of Bob the Builder looked more realistic and people in the show, including Bob, Wendy and Leo, looked more like real-life human beings. Bob and The Team live in a city named Spring City. The 2015 series ended in December 30, 2018 due to unknown reasons.

History[]

Bob the Builder was created by Advertising artist Keith Chapman, after spotting a JCB digger on the construction yard and thought to bring it to life in cartoon eyes. The digger was simply just named "Digger" (later on renamed to Scoop), with other machines followed. Keith Chapman brought the project to then HiT Entertainment CEO Peter Orton, who saw potential in Bob the Builder.

HiT began production on BtB sometime in early 1997. An unaired pilot was filmed later that year.

In 1998, The BBC signed on as the broadcaster for BtB. The show aired on 12 April, 1999. It was seen as a hit by July 1999.

In December 2000, The album "Can We Fix It?" was the No.1 record.

Bob the Builder debuted in the United States on Nick Jr. in 2001.

In 2003, the special "A Christmas to Remember" won the 2003 BAFTA award for best animated film.

In 2005, Bob the Builder stopped airing on Nick Jr. and starting airing on PBS Kids.

In 2015, Bob the Builder was rebooted.

With all Mattel-owned shows being taken off PBS Kids in 2017-2018, Bob the Builder was removed as well in 2018.

The show was picked up by Qubo in 2019 in the US and ran until February 2021 as Qubo ceased operations.

From 2019 to 2022, the Bob the Builder franchise has been on hiatus. In December 2022, the admin on the Bob the Builder Wiki said that a new titled Bob the Builder reboot series has started development. It was probably because Mattel Television and WildBrain both quietly started developing it and it is set to be announced and revealed sometime in 2025. A Bob the Builder film is currently in development.
